After is daring escape, Mauro made his way to West Africa in order to keep a low profile. Starting in Kenya, he moved his way south, under the guise of a tourist. During this period of wandering, he became fascinated with the breathtaking landscape, abundant flora and fauna (and the opportunity these give him to use Latin) and diverse cultures he experienced along the way.

As he meandered through, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa, he became intrigued by the idea of being able to somehow return something to the people of this continent which has given him such great experiences and memories - not to mention putting him in the good book with the man upstairs, or giving him a whole load of good karma, whichever comes first.

He reflected on his life to see if any of his skills - apart from those which could lead to an arrest - could be of help here. Thinking about his experiences as a computer security consultant in Europe, his work as a technical analyst for finacial institutions in Canada and the US, the work he did at the National Broadcasting Corporation in New York and even his time as an engineering student at the Univeristy of Waterloo, resulted in nothing. Nothing at all.

Then he saw the Geekcorps site and read about the innovative work being carried out to maximise the benefits of Internet and digital media in Africa, and thought he knew just enough technical terms and lingo to get through the selection process. As an added bonus, the project actually looked interesting and challenging...and would whisk him away to western Africa, where the authorities weren't looking for him.

Long story short, unless you happen to be a Law Enforcement Official, Mauro is now in Dakar working as a technical consultant on the Access to Markets project of the Digital Freedom Initiative in Senegal, and generally lying low.
