1970: Eric's born in Indiana. Experiences cold dark winters over the next 16 years of life.
1978-ish: Touches his first computer, the Radio Shack TRS-80. Unfortunately, it was his brother's on loan from school so he got a spanking for his trouble (those were pre-Time Out days, ya know)
1982-ish: Family gets their first computer, the Commodore 64 with disk drive, monitor, and printer. Confines himself to the basement for the next 4 years, missing most social aspects of junior and high school. But boy could he play the hell out of Jumpman.
1986: Father is transfered to Singapore for a year and he sees that there is a whole wide world out there beyond the corn fields and cold dark winters. Learns to program in Pascal on his first IBM, the 8088 computer.
1990: Interns with AT&T in Bangkok, Thailand as an Assistant Unix Systems Administrator. Social events start to become interesting to him. 1992: Does a study abroad in Tokyo, Japan studying Japanese society, culture, and interpersonal relationships. Graduates from Purdue University in December and now has to get a 'real job', or so his father says. 1993: Takes a very non-real job as an English teacher in Shimane, Japan to earn some cash and continue his studies of all things Japanese. 1995: On his way out the door of Japan, sends in an application for the US Peace Corps then undertakes a 5 month journey through South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Canada. 1996: Lands yet another fake job with the Peace Corps and serves two years in Jamaica as a Computer Lab Manager and Environmental Promoter at a high school. Develops fondness for warm beer and jerk chicken.
1998: Finishes 2 years with Peace Corps but they fail to make sure he gets on the plane home. Moves to Treasure Beach in south of Jamaica for the summer...which turns into a year. Pays for his Red Stripes buy prostituting his computer services and builds a web site to serve as half Lonely Planet-type guide book of the area and half cyber space for community tourism. (http://treasurebeach.net/) 2000: Hired by the University of California, San Francisco as a Computer Support Coordinator for two research departments. Finally learns of the superiority of the Macintosh platform. Loves the view of the Golden Gate bridge from his office, hates the massive outpouring of rent for his hovel and constant cold breeze which he swears is directly at him personally.
2001: Quits UCSF job, moves back to Treasure Beach to work on wave-motion studies and upgrade of web site. Sees ad for a program called Geekcorps and in a rare burst of clarity writes an application that actually gets accepted. Apparently they don't check references too closely.
2002: Going on fake job #3...
